Spike in Illegal Sand Transportation Cases in Coastal Karnataka – News Karnataka

Mangaluru: Coastal Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttar Kannada districts, has witnessed a sharp rise in illegal sand transportation cases over the past three years. The numbers surged from 32 in 2022 to 69 in 2023 and a staggering 228 in 2024. Dakshina Kannada recorded the highest cases, with 111 incidents, including 53 within Mangaluru City limits, according to MLC Ivan D’Souza.

D’Souza, citing home department statistics, raised the issue during a recent legislature session. He urged stringent action against the sand mafia and highlighted reports of assaults linked to illegal sand mining in the region. “Home Minister G Parameshwara acknowledged three assault cases and assured measures to curb illegal sand mining and transportation through regular raids,” he said.

To address the issue, taluk-level committees comprising officials from the mines and geology, police, and revenue departments have been established to conduct raids. The government also vowed to take action against any officials found colluding with the sand mafia.

D’Souza specifically mentioned illegal sand extraction from the Nethravati River near Pavoor-Uliya island. The mines and geology department has registered four cases and seized equipment, boats, and vehicles. A ban on sand extraction within 2 km of the island, issued under BNSS 152 in October, is being enforced by a task force.

The MLC emphasized the need for sustained vigilance to safeguard natural resources and prevent further environmental damage.
