Spotify's newest update makes its most useful feature even better

Summary

  • Spotify has updated its mobile app with a new layout for its queue feature.
  • Album art is now shown in the queue and users can now swipe left on a song to remove it.
  • The new design makes the queue feature similar to Apple Music, but users have mixed feelings about it.

Spotify’s queue system is a handy way to line up some of your favorite albums and songs to play. However, its user interface has always been a bit clunky. Luckily, that is changing.

The music streaming giant is rolling out an update for its mobile app that overhauls the design of the queue system. Before this update, album artwork for songs would not appear in the queue, and removing songs from it was a multi-step process that involved selecting it and tapping the remove button at the bottom of the screen.

Now, if you want to remove a song from the queue, you just have to swipe left on it to delete it, making the process much faster. This update makes Spotify’s queue feature very similar to Apple Music’s. However, users on X have mixed feelings about the change.

The queue feature on Spotify is a great way to line up your favorite songs to play without reorganizing your entire playlist. I use this feature when I’m going out for a run, and I know exactly what I want to listen to. To add a song to your queue on Spotify, navigate to the track and then swipe right on it.

To manage your queue, tap the queue icon in the bottom right when a song is fullscreen, you’ll then see all the songs you’ve added to it. You can change the order by tapping the three horizontal lines to the song’s right and dragging it up or down. To remove a song, swipe left on it. To clear your queue, tap Clear at the top of the screen. You can check out Spotify’s support page for more details.

This Spotify update is just a minor UI refresh, but it does make the queue feature much better looking and easier to manage. It never made sense to me why songs in the queue didn’t display album artwork, so I’m glad Spotify has rectified this. If you don’t see this change yet, it’s likely because the update is still rolling out.
