WILLINGTON, Conn. (WFSB) – It’s the season for ice missiles, those sheets of ice and snow flying off cars on the road.
While we are pretty far removed from winter storm Brant, and there has been plenty of time for folks to clean off their cars, you will still see some cars out on I-84 with snow and ice falling off the roofs.
It’s illegal and dangerous.
This time of year, you can add ice missiles to the long list of things troopers are on the lookout for on our roads.
“You have snow and ice accumulating on top of your car and it’s actually sliding off the top of your car, were you aware of that?” asked Trooper Kyle Gagne, Troop C. “We see large amounts of ice and debris falling off vehicles.”
Troop C alone recently got several 911 calls from drivers complaining ice missiles hit their cars.
“That’s a huge safety concern. We’ve seen where it causes significant front-end damage to vehicles. It smashes the windshield,” Gagne said.
Channel 3 went on a short ride along with Gagne. During that time, we saw a handful of cars not properly cleared.
All of them were let off with a written warning.
“I’ve seen more on trucks than cars,” said Marilyn Taylor, Westborough, MA. “The trucks have been really hitting me on the windshield. I am trying to avoid driving behind or next to them.”
It’s a $120 fine if you’re caught with ice and snow on the roof, and even more if it falls and causes any damage.
