Storm causes damage to family’s home and cars – WSAZ

WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A family in Wayne County woke up to find that the high winds had caused damage to their property.

Their pergola was picked up by the storm and landed on their cars.

The structure was bolted down, but the wind was able to move it about 25 feet.

It smashed one car’s sunroof and cracked another car’s windshield.

Bits of the deck were broken, and chairs were turned over.

The family will now assess the damage and clean up what they can.

Homeowner Roger Smith said that his neighbors didn’t sustain damage like this.

“We had an alert at about 4:45 this morning and had no time to react,” Smith said. “Once we were trying to get to a safer place, then we noticed the damage. It was very fast. The winds came and then they were gone.”

Smith said he and his family were shocked when they found the damage.

He also said it’s another instance of how much the weather has impacted the region this year.

“For that type of wind to lift it up and then carry it as far as it did — it was unreal to us,” he said. “The wintertime was rough and then spring comes around. You’re looking for a break, and then it seems like the weather is always getting worse.”

The National Weather Service recommends staying up to date by enabling weather alerts.
