Swatter calls in bomb threat to Hy-Vee and demands Apple gift cards, police say – KWQC


MOLINE, Ill. (KWQC) – Hy-Vee staff in Moline called police after receiving a bomb threat that also included a demand for money in the form of Apple gift cards.

Police are investigating it as a case of swatting.

Officials from the Moline Police Department said, around 12:45 p.m. Friday officers responded to a reported bomb threat at the Hy-Vee on Avenue of the Cities.

Store staff had evacuated all customers and employees. Police said no suspicious device was found.

A store employee had gotten a phone call from a person who claimed a bomb was inside the store. The caller also demanded Apple gift cards.

The store returned to normal operations within 30 minutes.

The incident is under investigation as a case of falsely reporting an emergency to provoke a large law enforcement response, or swatting.

Police said there is no threat to the public.
