In 2021, a massive T-Mobile data breach led to one of the largest settlements in the US. During the attack, threat actors managed to get access to the personal data of 76 million US customers. The telecom operator agreed to a $350 million settlement in 2022 to resolve claims that its negligence led to the data breach. Now, after years of waiting, the company has announced its plans to compensate users affected by the substantial data breach.
How much will each T-Mobile user get?
Starting next month, those T-Mobile subscribers who qualify to get benefits from the data breach settlement should begin to see their payments arrive. According to The Hill, the settlement payments might be smaller than $25 for some. If you can prove that the data breach cost you serious money, the company will prioritize your claim and could award you as much as $25,000 in the settlement.
T-Mobile’s users badly affected by the 2021 data breach had to show proof that they lost money because of the time it took to lock down their accounts. T-Mobile will also reimburse them for the money they spent on credit monitoring services to offset losses from identity theft.
The settlement payments should start arriving from April
Those expecting to receive a share of the $350 million T-Mobile data breach settlement should start getting their payments in April. The company has already notified those eligible to receive a payment in 2022. If the breach affected you, make sure to start checking for new emails from the telco this Tuesday to see if you’ve received your share of the settlement from the class action lawsuit.
It’s worth mentioning that T-Mobile users who didn’t have any documentation showing out-of-the-pocket losses during the breach will get a payment of up to $25. T-Mobile subscribers living in California at the time of the attack in August 2011 will get as much as $100.
Each claimant can choose the method via which the company sends payments. Some users will receive their money directly into their bank accounts, while others will receive a paper check.
