Tapo has announced a new smart door lock at CES, a palm-scanning one. The name of the product is the Tapo PalmKey smart door lock. While its palm-scanning feature is front and center, that’s not the only way you can open your front door.

This smart lock also allows you to enter a PIN, of course, while it has a fingerprint scanner too, in case you prefer that to palm-scanning. Its palm scanner does require your hand to be roughly four to 10 inches away from the reader, though.
In case you’re wondering if this feature will work if your hand is wet or dirty, yes, it should. Tapo’s system utilizes AI in order to assess the vein patterns within your palm. This actually reminds us of the TCL Smart Lock D1 Pro, which was also announced at CES 2025.
As per usual, this smart door lock consists out of two parts, one for the outer side of the door, and one for the inner side. The outer module has a palm-scanning feature, a PIN layout, and a fingerprint scanner. As you can see in the provided image, it increases in thickness from top to bottom.
The inner module is very simple, as you can see, it’s very similar to many others we’ve seen on the market. That inner module is a bit taller in comparison.
It offers a rechargeable battery which you’ll need to recharge once a year
The Tapo PalmKey smart door lock comes with a removable 10,000mAh battery. That battery is also rechargeable, but the company says you can get one year’s worth of use with a single charge.
Do note that there’s also support for a physical key backup, just in case. This smart lock is compatible with Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings, in case you were wondering.
What we don’t know at this point is how much will this product cost, nor when will it be released. Tapo has not released such information just yet.
