The global app economy is seeing an upward trend in 2024, at least in terms of consumer spending. According to mobile analytics and intelligence company, Appfigures, global app downloads saw a decline in 2024 compared to last year.
Global app downloads see a decline in 2024 compared to the last year
Global app downloads stand at 110 billion in 2024, a decline of 2.3% compared to last year. The Appfigures report also suggests that a downward trend was seen across the App Store and Google Play Store. Out of 110 billion app downloads, iOS app downloads accounted for 28.3 billion. That’s a decline of 1.1% from last year.
Whereas, Android app downloads stand at 81.4 billion with a year-over-year decline of 2.6%. In the US, App Store downloads were down by 5.3% to 6.1 billion in 2024. Whereas, Play Store downloads saw a drop of 0.7% to 4.4 billion.
In total, the US app downloads dropped by 3.4% to approximately 10.6 billion in 2024. Temu emerges as the most downloaded app in the US with a total of 48 million installs. Not to forget, Apple recently confirmed that the app was downloaded the most in the country from the App Store.
There is an upward trend in global consumer spending on apps and games
Global consumer spending on mobile apps and games reached $127 billion in 2024 across the Google Play Store and App Store. That’s a growth of about 15.7% from 2023. It’s worth noting that only 5% of subscription-based apps accounted for 48% of the app revenue globally across both app stores.
Interestingly, 13.7% of all consumer spending comes only from the top 10 earning apps. It’s an increase of 1.2% from 12.5% in the last year. Out of the total $127 billion consumer spending, $92.6 billion alone came from the App Store with a year-over-year growth of 24%. Whereas, consumer spending from the Play Store declined by 1.5% in 2024 from last year amounting to $35.7 billion globally.
The Appfigures report indicates that TikTok was the top app in terms of global consumer spending in 2024 with an estimated $2.5 billion across both the App Store and Google Play Store. Moreover, TikTok also emerged as the top app in the United States, drawing in approximately $1.3 billion alone in 2024.
