The name of Samsung's XR headset might upset Nintendo

Samsung’s XR headset, Project “Moohan”, the Apple Vision Pro killer; there a several names for Samsung‘s upcoming Android XR-powered device. This is until the company reveals the official name for the device. We don’t know when we’ll know the name for the device, but we have an idea. According to a patent application for the headset, it looks like this device could have the name Samsung Switch.

Obviously, you’ll want to take his news with a grain of salt, as we’re dealing with unofficial information. Anything could change between now and the official announcement. While we don’t know when Samsung will give us a glance at this device, the next Galaxy Unpacked event seems to be the perfect time to give us a proper introduction.

We already saw an extra device show up on the leaked promo for the next Galaxy Unpacked poster. Along with that fourth phone, who knows if Samsung will show off its headset?

Samsung might name its XR headset Switch

This naming convention seems rather odd for Samsung, as it doesn’t sport the Galaxy branding. We’d expect something like the “Galaxy Vision” or “Galaxy XR”. Also, there’s already a popular tech device on the market with the name Switch. So, this makes us question the validity of this just a bit.

However, there’s legitimate information to back this up. On the name “Samsung Switch” pops up on the UK’s official Intellectual Properties Office website. This filing has the number: UK00004139631. While still isn’t objective proof that Samsung will go to this name, a patent filing is a bit more solid than a tweet from a tipster.

As if that isn’t enough, Samsung also filed this name with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. So, we know that Samsung is married to this name enough to at least shot it to different patent offices. The latter has the filing number 019122799.

Could this be an issue for Nintendo

So, we’re all thinking the same thing: “Nintendo is probably drawing up legal papers as we speak!” The name Switch has already been plastered onto a device, and we can’t help but to wonder if Nintendo will have an issue with this naming.

We all know Nintendo as the company that would sue you if your name has the same number of letters as the name Nintendo, so it seems likely that the company would have an issue. However, Samsung’s and Nintendo’s devices both sever two very different purposes. The Nintendo Switch is a gaming device. While Samsung’s device can be used for some gaming, it’s mostly for an XR experience. If Nintendo does file a lawsuit, it might not be an open-and-shut case.
