The OnePlus Open 2 Will Be the Thinnest Foldable We’ve Seen

Back in the earliest days of the modern smartphone, we witnessed the Thickness War, with smartphone OEMs trying to make their devices thinner and thinner. Well, until it got to a point where people didn’t need phones any slimmer than we had them. Fun fact: non-removable batteries became a thing because they allowed for thinner devices.

Excluding rumors of an iPhone 17 Air and the Galaxy S25 Slim, we don’t care about thinness with regular bar phones. It’s a different story with foldables. When folded, a lot of them are still unwieldy. However, it’s confirmed that the upcoming Oppo Find N5, and consequently, the OnePlus Open 2, will be the thinnest we’ve ever seen.

The Oppo Find N5, the OnePlus Open 2’s Template, Will Be the Thinnest Foldable Yet

By now, I’m sure you know all about the relationship between Oppo and OnePlus, two major smartphone OEMs under the same parent company. We’ve seen a lot of Oppo devices released in China that serve as the template for OnePlus models that are released globally. That was the case with the original OnePlus Open, which was nearly a 1:1 copy of the Oppo Find N3, but with a different name slapped on it.

We expect that to be the case for the Oppo Find N5 as well, so any news that we hear about that upcoming foldable can be safely assumed to apply to the OnePlus Open 2. The best part is that today’s isn’t even a rumor, but is official from Oppo’s CEO, Pete Lau. He even shared a teaser image.

According to the man himself, the Oppo Find N5, when it launches, will be the thinnest foldable in the entire world, and that’s saying something major. We can assume that applies to its thickness when folded and unfolded. For it to claim that record, it’ll need to be thinner than the Honor Magic V3, which is 4.4 mm unfolded and 9.2/9.3 mm folded. Could Oppo and OnePlus’s foldables be the first to go sub-9 mm? We’ll see.

Some Specs for the Upcoming Foldables Have Been Rumored

Nothing is certain until it comes from an official source, but certain tipsters have a nice enough track record to take that word as gospel. From Digital Chat Station, we know that the Find N5 is going to have titanium in its build somewhere. That might just be the hinge or it could be the entire frame. Either way, it’s a win for build quality.

Wisdom Pikachu, another tipster plying his trade on Weibo, reiterates a focus on a durable design. However, he also confirms wireless charging, a Snapdragon 8 Elite, a battery nearing the 6,000mAh mark, and the return of Hasselblad to the triple-camera setup.

The Oppo Find N5’s Launch Is Confirmed for February; OnePlus Foldable Should Follow Soon After

Besides teasing how incredibly thin the device is expected to be, Pete Lau also confirmed that the Oppo Find N5 is going to be arriving in February, which is just a month away, so that’s quite exciting.

The Oppo Find N3 and the OnePlus Open both launched on the same day, but based on rumors we’ve been privy to, it doesn’t seem like that’ll be the case for both sequels. However, there’s no reason to believe that the OnePlus Open 2 will release too long after. A spring launch is essentially guaranteed, so we’ll be looking forward to that.
