With a starting price of £3,000, the iconic Peugeot 308 (2013-2021) has risen in value by a jaw-dropping 4.9 per cent.

The 1.2 litre Puretech is renown for its “wet” timing belt, making the diesel options more reliable, the Telegraph reports.

Older versions had a 1.6 litre engine while the later models transferred to 1.5.

The 1.5 litre engine can reach 60mpg-plus on a long run.

It is also a very comfortable vehicle, with a dashing interior.

Other vehicles such as the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer (2015-2021) and the Kia Ceed (2018-2022) also experienced a 4.9 per cent increase in value.

However, three vehicles have experienced a boost in demand by over 5 per cent.

They include the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (2014-2022), the Renault Megane (2016-2021), and the Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport (2017-2020).

Following the Volkswagen emissions scandal, otherwise known as “dieselgate”, the reputation of diesel cars was heavily damaged.

However, a decade later and buyers are familiarising themselves with diesel cars and their qualities.

Now, the value of nearly-new diesel cars is on the rise, experts at Cap HPI revealed.

This figure, drawn from January 2025 marks a turning point for diesel cars – outpacing every other fuel type.

However, supply is struggling to meet demand as of the 10 cars which rose fastest in value, six are diesel.

It comes after ministers pledged last year to ban petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and hybrids by 2035.

Having experienced some industry blows, there were hopes the rush to Net Zero would lessen.

But it was understood ministers are looking only at tweaks to strict zero-emission vehicle rules.

A review by Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds may instead bring in more flexibility, such as letting manufacturers buy permits or delay penalties for missing early targets.

Stellantis, owner of Vauxhall, is closing a plant in Luton, putting 1,100 jobs at risk, due to EV targets.

Stellantis, who are Europe’s second-biggest maker of cars, have been weighting up their options after months of discussions with the UK government over their electrification rules.

A source said: “There is no U-turn. The Government has been clear it was just new cars powered solely by petrol and diesel that would be banned.

“Hybrids have always been part of the plan to support the transition.”

A spokesman said: “The Government’s commitment is to phase out the sale of new cars powered solely by internal combustion engines by 2030 — this has not changed.

“We will bring forward a consultation which will consider how to support industry to reach this date.”

Just weeks before, it was revealed the value of some second-hand electric vehicles has halved as a slowdown in demand sends used car prices tumbling.

Campaigners blame the slump on the Government pushing back the ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035 — along with a lack of cash incentives to buy used.
