Thieves target cars parked in airport parking lots at major US airports – WJLA

Thieves have been targeting cars parked in garages and lots at various U.S. airports. ABC News reports car thefts have more than tripled at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta and a theft ring has allegedly stolen more than 50 cars at Dallas Fort Worth Airport in order to resell them in Mexico with reprogrammed key fobs.

All major local airports – BWI Marshall, Dulles, & Reagan National – said they are not seeing any spikes in auto theft at their garages and lots. A spokesperson for BWI said car theft is going down at that airport.

“We work very closely with our law enforcement and aviation security partners to help ensure a safe, pleasant experience for our customers,” BWI Marshall spokesperson Jonathan Dean wrote in an email. “Our law enforcement and security partners will, of course, be highly visible in and around the airport during the holidays.”

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority – which runs both Dulles and Reagan National – said it has its own police department with more than 220 sworn officers.

Airport authorities remind travelers if you see something suspicious, you can contact MWAA police 24/7 by either calling 911 and asking for airport police or by calling (703) 417–2400.

Local airports said you can help avoid becoming a victim of car theft or a break-in by not leaving any valuables in plain sight and making sure you lock your door.
