U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Gov. Roy Cooper survey N.C. Helene damage – ABC NEWS 4

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited Asheville’s River Arts District with Gov. Roy Cooper on Thursday, Oct. 17 as the area continues its recovery from Helene.

“The damage, of course, is overwhelming. We’ve all seen the national media reports. I sat in command centers in Washington getting live updates from North Carolina. But, there’s nothing like being here, seeing it for yourself, speaking with people who have been impacted,” Buttigieg said.

He added that with thousands of damaged structures and hundreds of road closures, the region has a long recovery process.

The whole country is rooting for Asheville and all the communities that were affected,” Buttigieg said.

Gov. Cooper said that the Biden-Harris administration is currently doing everything in its power to aid Western North Carolina quickly.

Cooper said that the U.S. Department of Transportation has already provided $100 million to the recovery process.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg then visited Canton. N.C., with Gov. Roy Cooper as the area continues to recover from Helene.
