VLC will create subtitles for you to keep things simple

VLC player will create subtitles for you thanks to AI, you will not have to track them down for your movies or TV shows. VideoLAN, the company behind the app/program, demoed the feature at CES 2025.

VLC will actually create subtitles for you with some help from AI

The company actually demoed automatic AI subtitling and translation. Best of all, all of this has been generated locally and offline in real-time. So you won’t even need to have an Internet connection to get it to work.

“At the same time we have automatic translation working to translate the subtitles to your own language,” said Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the President of VideoLAN. The company actually plans to support over 100 languages.

OpenAI has been working on AI-powered subtitling for a while. However, VideoLAN’s solution seems to be baked into its software, and it seems to be the company’s own solution. This was only a demo, though, so we’re not sure when exactly is the feature coming.

This feature will make things easier for a lot of people, no more hunting down subtitles

One thing is for sure, this will make things a lot easier for a lot of people. Not everyone relies on streaming these days, and for those of you who do not, or have a backlog of media files, this feature will surely come in handy.

It’s also worth noting that this week, VideoLAN celebrated hitting 6 billion downloads. Kempf said the following: “The number of active users of VLC is actually growing, even in this age of streaming services.”

That only goes to show that streaming is not everything. Once VideoLAN makes this feature a reality, it could attract even more users. It will be one of the most notable features that the app/service has pushed out there in a long time. As already mentioned, however, we still don’t know when exactly is it coming. Let’s hope it’ll drop at some point this year.
