Washington’s most dominant wins since 2000: Remember the 48-point Apple Cup beatdown? – The Husky Haul

Let’s hop in a time machine for a moment. Because, as I’m parsing through the entirety of the Washington Husky football record book this offseason, I want to explore some of the most dominant wins in Washington football history.

And given that there’s a lot of rich history to celebrate and enjoy, let’s try to get a bit more recent. Our time machine isn’t going too far back. Let’s take a look at the slice of time that is the 21st Century, shall we? This century has been pretty good for the Huskies, all things considered.

Yes, sure, there have been some ups and downs, but Washington Husky football has seen some truly great times and some truly impressive wins over the past 25 years. And, looking all the way back to the year 2000, you’ll find some interesting (and definitely dominant) wins for UW.

To kick all of that off, let’s look at a 48-point beating that Washington gave the Washington State Cougars in the 2000 Apple Cup.

Exploring the most dominant Washington Husky football wins of the 21st century: Washington’s 48-point beatdown of Washington State in 2000

First, some key things to know about this game. THIS IS THE MOST DOMINANT WIN BY EITHER TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF THE APPLE CUP. The Huskies just flat out controlled the entirety of this game and that, my friends, is a lot of fun.

For Washington, that is. Not so much for Wazzu.

Here’s some quick numbers from the win:

  • Score: Washington Huskies 51 vs. Washington State Cougars 3
  • Margin of Victory: 48 points
  • Coaches: Rick Neuheisel vs. Mike Price
  • Washington’s leading passer: Marques Tuiasosopo (11-20, 190 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 184.3 rating)
  • Washington’s leading rusher: Rich Alexis (12 carries, 134 yards, 11.2 avg, 1 TD)
  • Washington’s final record: 11-1
  • Washington’s bowl destination: Rose Bowl (defeated Purdue 34-24)

Like I said, fun for UW. Not fun for Washington State.

How did Washington win this one with ease?

The Huskies really overwhelmed Washington State in this one en route to a Rose Bowl. And I think that’s good. UW managed to run for a grand total of 336 yards while averaging 6.3 yards per carry and the Huskies scored four rushing touchdowns.

That’s really impressive.

Washington happened to get 28 first downs in this game. The Cougars, on the other hand, only got a dozen. This one was all sorts of lopsided in Washington’s favor in so many different ways. Washington State could only gain 88 rushing yards. Just all sorts of lopsided.
