The Brutalist, a tale about the pursuit of the American Dream, is one of the major contenders in this year’s race for the Oscars. Directed by Brady Corbet, the film earned nominations in ten categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Actor in a Leading Role and Actress in a Supporting Role. The film has already won three Golden Globes and five awards at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, including the Silver Lion.
The film tells the story of a Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth (Adrien Brody), who, after surviving the Holocaust, immigrates to the United States. Thanks to the affluent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce), László starts working on a monumental building that can secure the future for him and his wife, Erzsébet (Felicity Jones).
The Brutalist is a truly epic tale with a whopping runtime of three hours and 35 minutes – it even contains a 15-minute break. Despite some controversies regarding AI use, Corbet’s film is considered one of this year’s most visionary films. The story of the ambitious architect is undoubtedly best seen on the big screen.
