Although Halloween is long behind us, the magic still hasn’t left movie theatres. Wicked, an adaptation of the stage musical based on the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire, takes audiences to the marvellous land of Oz. The story follows two young witches, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda (Ariana Grande), who will become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, known from the iconic film, The Wizard of Oz.

When will Wicked be released on VOD?
Universal Pictures, which distributes the film, hasn’t revealed any date when Wicked will premiere on digital. We will, however, try to estimate the time window based on Universal’s previous VOD releases.
The musical is considered one of this year’s most important blockbusters, and there are many indications that it will be a box office smash. If this comes true, the film may follow a similar path to Twisters, which hit VOD 25 days after its theatrical release. In that case, Wicked may appear on digital just before Christmas, around 17 December 2024.
However, the quick release of Twisters on VOD was a rather unique case. The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Despicable Me 4, which also succeeded at the box office, dropped on digital after 41 days and 69 days after cinematic release, respectively.
Therefore, it’s not out of the question that the digital release of Wicked will be even later – in that scenario, the film may become available for purchase and rental in January or February 2025.
Note that these dates are only predictions that Universal Pictures is yet to confirm.

When could Wicked be released on DVD/Blu-ray?
Physical copies of Universal’s films come after the release of movies on VOD. The mentioned Twisters hit DVD and Blu-ray 70 days after its digital release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie after less than a month, and Despicable Me 4 after just 2 weeks.
As you can see, Universal considers each film as an individual case. Based on the examples above, in the best scenario, copies of Wicked could go on sale in late December. Much more likely, however, is that they will appear in the first months of 2025.
When could Wicked be released on streaming services?
Universal’s films go on streaming within a month to a month and a half after their release on DVD and Blu-ray.
Peacock will be the first stop for Wicked – the film will spend four months there, then it will move to Netflix, where, according to the deal between the corporations, it will spend ten months. After that time, the film will return to Peacock again.
We estimate that on streaming, Wicked may appear in the spring of 2025.
