Woman’s car paint starts peeling after just 10k miles – then auto maker’s ‘ridiculous’ response made her ev… – The US Sun

THOUSANDS of motorists across the US have complained of paint peeling off their cars from a popular brand.

That includes Carrie Francom from Atlanta, Georgia, who says her white 2019 Hyundai Sonata had just 10,000 miles on the clock when it started to lose its finish.

Speaking to Channel 2 Action News, she said: “When it rains, it will just start coming off.

“I can’t even wash it now because if I try to wash it, more paint comes off of it.”

Francom says the bizarre ordeal began when she was staying at a hotel, leading her to think someone had scratched or scraped her car.

She added: “It’s embarrassing. I don’t like driving around like this. It looks like a Dalmatianlate-model.”

She’s not the only one who’s suffering the less-than-appealing situation either, as thousands of members are part of a Hyundai peeling paint group on Facebook – all suffering a similar issue.

Judging by the posts inside the group, this is something happening to multiple Hyundai owners across many different models.

And although all paint colors appear to be affected, white cars seem to be the most problematic.

Another Hyundai driver, Pamela Rainey, shared a picture of her car, and wrote: “It has been garaged since 2020.

“Came out of work to see this. I thought I was vandalized until I read about the paint issues Hyundai is having.”

“I spent $48,000 and at 50,000 miles, my paint started peeling,” said another woman, who shared her story on TikTok.

Worse still, many are not getting help they deserve from Hyundai, hence the amount of posts and complaints on social media websites and apps.

In a letter denying Francom’s claim, Hyundai wrote: “We do not believe the paint failed because of a defect.”

But on this, Francom said: “They came back and said I was out of warranty and that their material wasn’t defective, which is obviously false because there are thousands of Hyundais running around with paint missing.”

This comes as a proposed class action lawsuit about the peeling paint was filed in federal court in New York earlier this year.

Channel 2 consumer investigator Justin Gray even reached out to Hyundai, who replied with a statement: “A manufacturing issue with the paint on Hyundai vehicles is extremely rare and has only occurred in isolated incidents.

“Owners experiencing paint issues are advised to visit their local dealership or contact the Hyundai Customer Care Center.”

Francom added: “The fact that they said it was not a defect, that’s ridiculous.

“It’s really upsetting because I take really good care of my vehicle.”

Mary Trapp of Houston, Texas, has been left thoroughly frustrated throughout the ordeal and now faces potential fines for something that isn’t her fault.
