Even among legendary classic cars, the 1965 Shelby Daytona stands tall, so finding one that’s for sale might seem like a big deal. That is until you realize the reason it’s listed for just $62,500 is it’s a Factory Five reproduction model, not one of the rare originals. But most people couldn’t even dream of owning a genuine Shelby Daytona, so this might be as good as it gets.
Maybe you’d prefer a more modern Shelby GT350 instead?
Purists will automatically be turned off by this Shelby not only because it’s a reproduction model but also thanks to its 6.2-liter LS V8 that was donated by a 2016 Cadillac Escalade, of all things. Perhaps they feel a crate motor, especially a Coyote, would have been more appropriate.
However, the engine has some nice upgrades including Comp cams, Mahle PowerPak pistons, Wagner ported heads, ARP studs, Manton pushrods, an intake manifold from an LS3, and a 92mm throttle body. The owner claims all those parts weren’t just thrown in there but that a performance shop did the work, with receipts to prove that claim.
Backing up that stout V8 is a Tremec TKO600 5-speed manual transmission, allowing you to row through the gears, a proper setup for this kind of car. The transmission includes a Tilton 6000 Series throw out bearing, easy bleed braided steel lines, and a brand new clutch from an LS7.
There is a Ford contribution to this build, the 8.8-inch rear with a 3.37 Positraction diff featuring Auburn racing gears. There are also Alloy USA axle shafts included.
As far as the chassis, there’s a three-link rear suspension with Koni adjustable coilovers plus adjustable upper and lower control arms. The Wilwood brakes have 6 pistons in front and 2 in the rear, as well as drilled and slotted discs.
The current owner says he made the interior plusher by installing sound insulation and carpeting, plus an aluminum cupholder. Obviously, you could choose to keep this as a road touring car or modify it for more hardcore track use.
The big question is, would you go for this Shelby Daytona continuation or would you opt for something else?
