Elon Musk’s company xAI is reportedly testing a new standalone iOS app for its Grok chatbot. It’s a separate version of Grok that doesn’t require an account on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. It looks like xAI is working to make Grok available to more people without having to be a part of X as they test this new app.
The Grok iOS app is currently in beta
According to a report from Techcrunch, xAI’s new standalone Grok app is only for iOS users for now. The app is available in beta in select countries like Australia. It uses the Grok 2 AI model and is free for all users.
It includes features such as fetching data in real time, rewriting text, summarizing long paragraphs, answering simple questions, and generating images based on text prompts.
This month, xAI added some new features to its chatbot. You can now create a meme by tapping the square with the slash. You can ask about current events and get detailed answers. Grok can also analyze images you upload (blood test results, MRIs, and X-rays,) and give you useful info. It can also explain any image, including memes.
Grok is free for all X users
Grok was previously available only to X Premium users but was made free for all earlier this month. Unlike many free AI chatbots, Grok lets free users send as many as 10 messages every two hours and limits image generations to just three per day.
xAI is also working to bring the chatbot to the web through a dedicated website Grok.com. Right now, the website does not allow access to the chatbot, it says “coming soon” when you sign in with an xAI account.
xAI is probably testing the standalone app for Grok as part of plans to expand its use beyond X users. The app could also be an important step in making Grok more competitive with other AI tools. By putting the app on iOS, xAI will reach a huge number of potential users who use Apple devices. This may attract more users who need a more powerful AI assistant. Recent features such as generating images and summarizing text are also hinting that the Grok is becoming a more powerful tool.
