YouTube is constantly updating the platform to offer new experiences for viewers and creators. Late last year, the video streaming platform announced that users could upload longer Shorts, of up to three minutes in length. Now, YouTube appears to be testing a new video snippet tool that allows creators to make the most of their videos’ key moments.
YouTube’s video snippet tool lets creators edit and publish popular segments of their videos
If you don’t know it already, YouTube enables creators to see video insights that tell them how well their content is performing. Not only can they see the important metrics, but YouTube also provides a better look at the key video moments. This helps them understand what keeps their audience hooked on to their videos.
Google’s support page for YouTube talks a bit about this new tool. Per the support page, YouTube is testing a new video highlights tool in Studio. So, if you are an eligible creator, you’ll find a new option called “Create a video highlight” in the video editor tool while editing a video.
YouTube will then automatically highlight the popular segment that you can edit out. What’s interesting is that a creator can later publish it as a separate video. Do note that these videos won’t be a vertical upload like the Shorts. YouTube says that the edited video will instead retain the 16:9 aspect ratio, similar to the long-form ones. Notably, this new feature is only available in YouTube Studio for desktop for now.
The feature is available for eligible creators with English videos
This limited test is currently rolling out to a few creators who upload videos in English. As a viewer, visiting the YouTube app and checking the channels of such creators will show you video snippets. Those snippets would highlight the important moments from a video.
Putting it simply, it will allow you to quickly understand if the uploaded video satisfies your interests. If it does, you can always watch the long-form video from that channel. Moreover, YouTube hasn’t mentioned whether it will expand this new feature to more creators or not.
